Under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961, a Talaq must be notified to the Chairman of the Union Council, which then oversees a mandatory reconciliation period before the divorce becomes effective. On receiving the divorce notice, the Chairman constitutes an arbitration council and gives both parties an opportunity to reconcile over a period of ninety days.
